Programs and Services: Adult Training Facility
The Adult Training Facility (ATF) is located on Catawissa Avenue in
Williamsport. The program is housed in a modern 12,000 square foot
building. The welcoming atmosphere includes natural light from sky
lights. Extensive personal care is provided including tube feedings and
assistance with other needs. Staff work intuitively and diligently to
improve communication skills , sometimes using various forms of
assistive technology.
Adult Training Facility Staff
Thirty four staff, including five Human Services Professionals, provide
supports to nearly 100 individuals with mental retardation. Many of the
individuals are very physically and medically involved and require
extensive levels of support. While regulations require one staff for
every six individuals, the ATF provides a 1:4 or 1:5 staff: individual
ratio. Individuals range in age from 21 to the elderly. Over 75% live in
group homes while others live in nursing homes, personal care homes or
at home with their family.
Specialized Programs
The ATF has developed specialized programs for people with autism. The
“Autism Room” makes environmental adaptations to insure that the unique
needs of these individuals are met. Another specialized program for the
elderly, the Geriatric Program, allows individuals to enjoy activities
appropriate to their age. The group frequently attends activities at the
local Senior Citizens’ Center. Staff are trained in Alzheimer’s disease,
especially as related to the incidence of Alzheimer’s in individuals
with Down’s Syndrome.
Activities to Suit Each Individual
Activities throughout the program are geared toward the desires of the individuals. Music, arts and crafts, exercise, seasonal activities and cooking are just a few of the activities provided. Individuals participate in volunteer programs at nursing homes, the SPCA, Early Learning Programs, a local soup kitchen, and Meals on Wheels. Twenty four volunteers contribute over 1000 hours of their time every year. They are recognized annually by some of the organizations during Volunteer Month, which is held in April.
In addition, sensory motor activities provide health benefits, improve function, increase participation in and control over ones environment for an improved quality of life. Therapeutic massages are also available and has been especially beneficial tot hose in wheelchairs in improving circulation to legs and feet.
Hope's Adult Training Facility Welcomes You!
Paramount to the philosophy of the ATF staff is to be keenly aware of the wants and needs of each person, and to provide flexibility and options in programming. Following the Golden Rule, treating others as you would want to be treated, is always an important consideration.
Come see us! We are always decorated for the season and know how to
have fun!
