Realistic Job Preview
What do I do if an individual displays a challenging behavior?
Some of the people who receive supports at Hope have challenging
behaviors. It is important in your initial orientation and training to
find out what the possible behaviors are for those you are supporting.
This will allow you to become better prepared to deal with whatever
comes along.
Learning to deal in a manner that allows the person to become calm is vitally important. You will receive training on how to prevent or minimize these situations and how to handle them if they do occur. Behaviors are a means of communication; the challenge for staff is to determine what these behaviors mean. This is especially true if individuals are unable to speak. If you think you cannot learn to handle situations presented by individuals with challenging behaviors, it is important to state that fact at the initial interview.
